GPS Recommendation for Dual Sport Riders

We recommend the Garmin GPSMAP 78. You can order it from Camping World for $239.99. This GPS has been discontinued so supplies are limited:

Garmin GPSMap 78

You will need a handlebar mount for the GPS:

RAM® Handlebar U-Bolt Mount for Garmin GPSMAP 73, 78, 78S, 78SC

You will want to hard wire the GPS to your motorcycle’s 12 volt power system with this power cable:

Garmin Power and Data Cable for Garmin GPS and StreetPilot Series-010-10082-00,Black

We will load the tracks on your GPS at the event but to load maps and tracks and manage your track library yourself you will need Garmin Map Source or Base Camp. We use Map Source but Garmin does not sell it any more. You can buy used copies of Map Source software on Ebay.

GPS Setup Information

We hope you fine this information helpful. One tip we have found regarding the power cable is you want to solder all your connections instead of crimping them. Crimped connections vibrate and the power fluctuation will make your GPS turn off while you are riding. Another tip is you want the back light of the gps to stay on while you are riding so you can see it in the sunlight. If you don’t have the external 12 volt power cord installed, your back light will not stay on continuously.
